hi,

i have a Chinon Universal 8 projector. It jumps film noticeably, but i discovered by setting the 'Framing Lever' right down as low as possible, the film jumping stopped almost completely! The problem is, then the imagery is 1/4 off the screen*. Anyone got an idea how i can achieve jump-free footage whilst viewing whole frames, please?

presumably, the film framer trick is diagnostic, but i have no idea what to tweak in the projector to remedy the situation?

*i mean, the sky peeps in at the bottom of the frame and disappears at the top

hello

I dont know much about this make of projector, but it sounds like you have just misfed the film into it. You could try cutting off/ adding half a frame to the header of the film tape.
Is there a button you can push to remove the flicker/jumping?
This adjusts the tension on the film loop before
it goes through the gate, which I beleive is the cause of flickering/jumping.
The frame adjuster is different, I suspect its only removing the jumping as a side effect, its not what you should use.

Lightbulb

Hi - sorry about the delay in reply: i have been busy with the Chinon and other helpful advice!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">i learnt very quickly not to force the film into the film path - the sprockets are merciless if you mess with them!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">there is this button, but it is very light to the touch; i found manually pushing down on, and thus enlarging, the lower loop, stopped the flicker; i am still experimenting with what works best...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">you are correct - exaggerating the frame adjuster to stop the flickering causes the film to tighten up in all the wrong places, and is going to damage the film (wear it out), i am informed!

the answer lies in the lower film loop, it seems

also, the last two rollers on the film path do not spin evenly, even though i have carefully oiled them, but this may be a matter of minutely tuning them?

the main culprit here was the take-up spool, Super8 hub adapter, which was customised and incorrectly so. it allowed the take-up spool to freewheel, transferring all the tautness to the lower loop, so tensing it, and causing extreme film chatter

fixing the hub allowed the lower camera spindle to do its stuff and engage with the take-up reel. the loop former now works, i use it once, as soon as the film takes onto the lower spool; the chattering has stopped, but i need to test the projector out on a longer film, 300ft

got to lube it first, though!

i acquired a cheap editor (?5) and carefully undid the arms; i repositioned these either end of a narrow wooden board, length 5 feet; in the middle of the board are two raised rollers from the editor, in case the film goes slack in the middle; using this arrangement i lube/cleaned 300 feet of film, it took about 1 hour.

the lube was from Filmlab PA, it is great stuff, but VERY expensive for me to import into the uk

never mind!

ps - the company GEPE still manufacture 8mm cin? reels, and these come with plastic Super 8 adapter hubs!
